This is an original press photo. Shell holes beame shelters for infantrymen in the bitter and bloody fighting of World War I. These are near Verdun, where the French took the first blows of the war in August, 1914. They stopped the Germans, but in the seesaw trench warfare which followed, a million men died. The land was left so badly damaged that some of it never was recovered. Photo measures 9 x 7 inches. Photo is dated --1914.
